Rockaway Beach

You really can enjoy a good weather in Surf City, NJ, bur who knew, that it was also possible here in New York, and it just takes 50 minutes to get there? Everyone on this blog now knows it, ok.

On the beach you can find the usual set: families with cooler bags, umbrellas and sun tents and board games, well, beach blanket games. Surfers and sea gulls and stuff.

In case you're wondering how much apartments cost there, they according to advertisement posters start at 650.000 USD. And you can park your car anywhere you feel like.

We just walked there for some time, had a coffee and a curry, and after it started getting colder we just headed to the subway station and home. It's good to know, that you can be on the beach after 50 minutes MTA. Can you see me in a picture?

How to deal with puppies

So on Sunday we were walking down the 8th avenue, when we suddenly saw four puppies in the shop window. They were playing and running in their doggy aquarium and smelling on each other and enjoying their puppy lives.

I had this strange feeling that it wasn’t a good idea to go inside the puppy store just to take a look at more (more! moar! moar puppies!!), but I am a strong person, I am made of steel and I don’t plan to get a dog and in fact I always was afraid of them. Go inside, no worries.

There are a lot of good reviews about this store on the internet. they are all like: I had no intention on purchasing a dog, but 15 minutes later I found myself giving 2400 to the shop assistant. Or: I wasn’t going to have a dog, but I walked inside and took that one with me, so now I am moving out of town because my dog needs more space.

So I am not really going to walk down the 8th avenue ever again, but this isn’t that important. The important thing is: Where to get a puppy? What is the best name for a puppy? One or two of them? And what color is the best for a puppy food plate?

Some fog and USPS

This is what I call fog! Empire state building covered in fog, the streets are grey, it’s warm and the humidity makes me think of Vietnam. There is a green trees and flowers market in our street and the humidity is very authentic in these tree blocks.

So I just packed my things and went to the post office to return my shoes. If you want your package to be weighted, you come to the counter, which is all made of glass, you open the glass „door“ over the counter, you put your box in there - close in „door“!, and now close it better - and then the postal worker opens their glass part of the counter and can take your box to put it on the scale. It only is safe when one part is closed. It is a little bit lithe the doors in Reichstag in Berlin, where you first come through one door and wait for the other one to open.

Surf City

The plan for the week-end isn't ready yet, so here is something about a pretty old week-end. It was April when we headed to Atlantic City, and on the day after that to Surf City. It was before the Spring break, so the most shops and hotel were closed, and it was quiet and empty. We found a very cute motel, that was open - what a nice surprise, and also a sea food restaurant for the dinner. It is definitely great in summer, but still: how would it be?

On bread and drugs

So we all know, what the orange drug container looks like, House M.D., Vicodine, all this stuff. I am now as cool as he is, because I also have my orange drug container. Nice!

So I went to a doctor and got my prescription(s). The next day I walked into the nearest CVS pharmacy to take what belongs to me… and then wasn’t really sure if these prices were ones for antibiotics andactually for a block of gold. So I carefully walked out of the pharmacy, went home and called the pharmacies in Chelsea to get the average and best prices. But having found a good price isn’t all. You bring your prescription to the pharmacist, who makes a client account for you with your date of birth, phone number, allergies, address.. wait, could we do it without the address please? And then you walk out to wait for your order to be done.

Ok, that’s not a problem at all, there is a Gap full of dresses in the next street, I can wait. Take your time. Dunkin donuts is also somewhere there, but I am strong enough to avoid that spot.

So I thought, I will get the pills from a pic pack, but apparently the powder was packed in these little capsules or something. Hashtag #DIY

The other important thing is that I got some russian bread and buckwheat near the doctor’s office. Even if the taste isn’t 100% like at home, it smells authentic and is good to have at home. The buckwheat is not just a usual one I bought in St. Petersburg. It’s „Emperor’s supply“ buckwheat, that has the russian flag and the russian eagle on it. Still tasty.

New Jersey City and Hoboken

The bike tour to the Randall's Island yesterday was a hard thing for my softer parts, so the ride to New Jersey City was cancelled. Walking was still ok, so here is the story.

There are four ways I know to the other side of the Hudson river:
- by bus from the Port Authority in the 42nd street - 3.30 USD
- by train from the Penn station - it is definitely possible, but I don't have any information based on experience
- by NY water taxi from the WTC Pier to NJ City - 4 USD
- by NY water taxi from the 39th street to Hoboken - around 10 USD

So we went to the WTC Pier, bought the one-way tickets, looked at Manhattan with eyes full of island love. New Jersey pizza - check, coffee - not found, Hoboken - check, Hoboken train station - check and A+ in cuteness, piers - check and awwwww.

The area looked quiet, a little bit like Catalonia and some outlying districts in St. Petersburg. The whole thing is more like having a family and making the week-end shopping for the week and going out to the playgrounds and parks, than Manhattan and its grab-a-coffee-but-fast-please. The child-friendly-ness also covers some adults: if you don't know, what the traffic light signals are, they will always help you:

When me made it to the next water taxi pier to get to the 39th street it already was 8:30 pm, and the last one departed at 8:22 pm. There still are some night water taxis on Saturdays, so there is still a chance of a party someday. But this time it was getting cold and with no taxi cabs in sight.

I love the end of this story as people love the american dream: there was a bus with a very nice driver, who stopped after my hopeless waving. 3,30 for each, and 10 minutes later we were on the home island.

мой новый каждый день // my new daily routine

Hi there, I am Ira and I am trying to keep all my web presence things updated. I go for a walk, make some photos, make an appointment with a new person for a photo shooting, I make pictures on my way there and back home, I edit them and post them: on flickr, on the public page in vkontakte, on the photo blog on the website. After that I browse some tutorials on the web presence and on marketing your new business. I search through lightroom presets, slideshow software and online galleries, and also on youtube and creative live for inspiration and tips. It's fun, new and I like this new routine.

West village

I only have seen West Village full of people during the week-ends and pretending to be empty in the late late evening. And I kept reading about this charming place, and how everyone was in love with it, and how cute and cosy everything looked. Now I've seen it too - on my way home yesterday. Also after the big talks and Facebook postings about the Manhattanhenge sunsets and after waiting for them I can compare the other sunsets to it. I am happy to say, that the usual everyday sunsets are not a tiny bit less magic than the Manhattanhenge ones.

Memorial day: Philadelphia and Washington DC

What did I know about Philadelphia? Cheesesteak! University, and cream cheese? No, cream cheese isn’t really connected to the city, that’s what Wikipedia told me. At the moment of the planning I didn’t even know about Rocky, but now I do, hehe.

What did I know about Washington D.C.? My friend has been there during her work&travel summer and liked it, and all the things you see in the movies.

Both of them were perfect for the week-end. I liked it, that Philadelphia has water in it, and the harbour, the garden with hanging mats on the shore, the flea market, the very tasty pho in the old town, the evening cheesesteak a walk through the campus and the sunset in the skyscraper near the train station in the 30th street.

II don#t think, that what we saw was the real Washington, actually. It looks like it should be full of people and sound buzzing, but on the Memorial day week-end it was empty. I had a chance to look into the little gardens and the back yards, to relax and eat a ham and gruyere croissant, and the food market… It was so stress-free and shiny and slowly moving.. And the bars and cafes with open spaces. Green and perfect.

The great part was coming back home. Have these noises been here when we left? Is it louder now, because everyone started using their air conditioning? Was it really that quiet in the two cities? No, here comes the best part: You can see the lights of the Empire state building when you approach Manhattan by train.

2 // Sunday bike vol. 2

Hm, why is it that cold?

Sunday was announced to be rainy, but in the morning the weather was nice, so we we put our bike things on and started of. Before the big rain started we had already done an acceptable list of things: a park, a bridge, a lighthouse, and a bike store in the end of it.

When the real rain started, we were already in a vietnamese cafe with a pho in front of us. So, key words would be: relaxed, pho, lightning bolts and thunderstorm? And a flash flood warning on the cell phone, huh. And with all these things and the rain it looked like they just insisted on a banana coconut cake, because we just couldn’t leave the cafe.

So today it is 54°F and it was 84°F on Saturday. Any life advice on how to live with a weather like this?

5/29/2015

The pictures from Washington and Philadelphia are still on the SD card unedited, and the blog text isn't written yet, and the pictures from the photo walk with Nora are also waiting for me, so I will be doing this today, and here - just so that you can somehow enjoy your time without me - is the very funny Amy Schumer on how to choose a movie.

UPD: The Cocktail isn't that bad.

Today was the last day of the first week in my online photography class. Jasmine Star is a great wedding photographer from California, and with her photographs she shows how beautiful, romantic, relaxed people are. I love the feeling I get while looking at her airy portraits: her clients are in love, happy, open, funny. There are many of her tutorials on youtube, so that one can find answers to their questions about posing, communication, light, attitude etc. She is great and very inspiring.

Here are some things I learned today:

- you need to scope the location, make a previsualization and some kind of a plan or list of the pictures you would like to get
- think of the instructions you are going to give to your clients bacause if you think about it in advance, it will be easier to say when you need it
- give the client something to do, an action, so that the pictures look natural and not stiff
- relax and by doing so let your client relax, also show that you can be silly and funny, and this lets your client know, that they can do / are allowed to do the same
- control the situation, but let the client choose between some offered options
- be confident and take the responsibility for the shooing, and by doing this let your clients know, that they can just relax and don’t need to think that they are responsible for the pictures
- let them know, that you think, they are great, beautiful and funny
- shoot the pictures in the way, that lets your clients understand, that they are better and capable of more, than they thought they are
- be confident (or look confident) and don’t let your inner introvert take the leading part

So it’s actually so easy and familiar to me! I have heard these statements during my studying time at the university and in many of the teaching trainings during my teaching time. Think and write down the directions for you student: what do you want them to do? Write a plan of your lesson. Make the student understand, that they are capable of being and doing better and knowing more. Take their stress and anxiety from them by giving them directions and letting them know, that they do a great job. Relax and be funny or even silly, so that they know, that they are also allowed to be it. Take the control on the situation, but let the students decide between the offered options. I have been knowing it all the time, ha!

The next important piece of advise, that Jasmine gave in one of the previous lessons, is that a photographer should stand by his or her own style and not try to be as the other ones are. This is a statement I also know from teaching: if a teaching style suits you, stand by it. Don’t blame yourself if a teaching style, that a coworker has, doesn’t fit you. Do as you are comfortable to do.

It is really a funny feeling, that I have been knowing it for so long, but never thought that the same would work in the photography process. I understand, that knowing it doesn’t mean that I can do it, but I am sure, that these statements and goals will work for me sooner or later (sooner!).

Considering the shooting I am up for today: I have a plan, I have scoped the area, previsualization is also pretty done. I still will read the statements once again and make some thoughts on them.

This online course is a nice new step for me, that I am very happy about.

велосипед в воскресенье // the Sunday bike ride

The first big bike tour had a couple of miles in it, hard to say, how many of them it was, but definitely enough for the first big time. View to Manhattan from Brooklyn: check. Washington street view to the Brooklyn Bridge: check. Pizza under the bridge: eaten and check. We even have seen a couple looking for apartments (poor unhappy people, so sorry for them, still on apartment hunting) to buy (sorry, I'm taking the "poor unhappy" part back).

The best bike path to Brooklyn seems to be the Manhattan Bridge. We did both of the bridges (the Brooklyn b. on the way to Brooklyn, the Manhattan b. on the way back), and I likes the MB ride better. On the bike you have a separate bike path on the right side of the bridge, great view, East river and a safety net for the nervous ones like me. I even started worrying about falling into the East River during the second half of the ride on the bridge, what a great feeling!

The very pleasant part of the tour was the Battery Park. I look forward to having a coffee there on the next tour.

что мне нравится в НЙ // what I like about NY

When I meet a new person here, they always ask me, what I like best about New York. I actually already have learnt by heart the most answers I can use during a relaxed small talk, and the question about what I like best Is the only one I don’t have a good answer for. It sounds like it’s the best time to make a list of ...

What I like best about NY

  • The evening light. The sun is pretty harsh sometimes in the evening when you are in the the western part of Manhattan. The light gets warm, pink-ish and even a little golden then, and after that you can enjoy the sunset over Jersey.
  • How the water on Hudson river smells, even better in the evening.
  • Typographics, prints, production design. Even the corn flakes boxes look trendy and the letters on the Chelsea Meat Market look just perfect.
  • The color combination of brown and grey, which look warm in the day and during the sunset. They were all warm even when it was snowing, ha!
  • When you enter a/the Park, the sounds of the city just disappear. It is so quiet as if you were outside of the city. You just enter any bigger green part of the street and it becomes all nature-y.
  • Every part of Manhattan is different from the other ones. When I walk from home in the upper east, every 10 minutes the streets tend to change. On the one hand you can’t really notice it changing, but when it has changes, you see it: whoa!

A great thing that I like about New York is that you just take the subway and 40 minutes later you find yourself at the ocean (maybe even sooner if you know how to do it, I just only did it one time yet). And you always can find a park or a garden, and there are parks in the state, where you can ride a bike (and it is allowed to take a bike on a train, ha!). I like, that you can go to Ikea by a water taxi, and that there are other water taxies to other places.

I like that everyone is different. They are different from each other just like in Berlin, but somehow in an other way.

I actually thought, that it would be hard for me to write a blog posting like this, because there are things that I dislike. It seems now, that it is hard for me to stop, because there are so many things that I like, and it is not really easy to sort out only the most important of them.

I like being here.

St.-Tropez and Instagram

So this bike flea market in Brooklyn. There were all kinds of bikes there, even ones with the american flag on the bell and daisies in the basket.

Hi I would like to have an affordable bike, that actually is still rideable but also vintage looking enough and good Instagram. Maybe a St.-Tropez from 1970 in a perfect condition. Miss would like to take it on a test ride please.

If it wasn’t a St.-Tropez, then it definitely was a Peugeot, and the frame lines were so noble, and the tires were so beautifully thin, and oh god I will be so stylish and uptown on it. So I sat on it. But what a strange feeling it is, when the brakes don’t work!

So, I gave up and ordered a new one in a store. I think I should better just take smooth warm analogue pictures of all these vintage bikes and let someone else ride them.
